Subproject 1
Real-time measurements of network traffic and topology, using state-
of-the-art technology
Internet topology and Internet traffic patterns are the
subject of intense research. For the time being, only partial information is
available on the behaviour of Internet traffic (models for a single link) and In-
ternet topology (DNS information). Most theoretical work on Internet topology rely on a few static snap-shots, which are both out of date and US-centric.
We will initiate a sustained program of measurement that looks for much
which has been hidden from previous centralised efforts, and distribute our
sampling broadly over Europe. We will accomplish this by creating centralised
points from which measurement can be coordinated, placing high temporal
precision measurement systems in the networks operated by our Telecom part-
ners in the various countries, and even explore the ultimate @home style of
approach in which every client in the network participates in a small, light way
in distributed measurement of network presence, topology and performance.
